As a green coffee importer, our sustainability comes from developing relationships at origin. We have to be present, be consistent, and show up year after year as a reliable buyer. One of the ways we do this is through visits to origin. Following his recent trip to Guatemala to source some of our favorite Huehuetenango coffee, Senior Trader Camilo Yubank discusses why it’s so important to maintain strong ties with our producers.

At Royal New York, forming relationships is at the heart of what we do. Our job is to recognize quality, understand the needs of our suppliers, and work as equal partners with everyone throughout the supply chain.
The past five years, however, have tested that commitment. Between COVID-19 lockdowns, container shortages, disruptions in global trade routes, rising interest rates, inflation, and constant market volatility, it hasn’t been easy for anyone in the coffee industry. Still, we’ve stayed focused on what matters: supporting the producers we work with and continuing to supply our roasters who rely on these relationships.
Now, as we begin our 31st year as Royal New York, our approach remains unchanged. We continue to travel, spend time at origin, and also foster the relationships that allow us to source coffees with consistency and purpose, coffees that roasters can rely on.
Recently, that commitment brought us on a two-day journey to visit our longtime coffee partners at Asobagri in Barillas, Huehuetenango. Asobagri is an association of coffee producers based in the town of Barillas, Guatemala. The organization has almost 2,000 members from indigenous communities across the northern region of Huehuetenango, and we’ve been working with them since they began producing coffee in the 1990s.
Beyond producing coffee, Asobagri plays an important role in supporting its members. They provide access to financing, healthcare, scholarships, and ongoing technical assistance to improve both efficiency and quality in the production of organic coffees.
The quality from Asobagri continues to improve every year. If you’ve featured their coffees on your menu before, this is a great year to bring them back. Their organic lots listed below have shipped and will be arriving next month.
We encourage you to continue supporting their work. Don’t miss your chance to secure your inventory on these stellar offerings. Please reach out to your trader if you’d like more information, to reserve your inventory, or to cup through the lots with us. We’re always happy to share what offerings we have in the works!
