Tariff Refund Update April 2026 – Part 1

If you’ve been following recent news around green coffee imports, you’ve likely seen a shift regarding tariffs paid in 2025. With new guidance now in place, importers are eligible to file tariff refund requests for previously paid duties.

At Royal New York, we are actively working to reclaim these funds so we can issue refunds to impacted clients. We will continue to monitor the situation and publish subsequent as more information becomes available.

April 2026 Tariff Refund Timeline from Royal New York

What Changed?

On February 20th, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not authorize the President to impose tariffs. This ruling invalidated those tariffs and created a clear pathway for importers to pursue a tariff refund.

Where Things Stand

As of April 20th, 2026, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) began accepting refund claims through the CAPE (Claims and Post Entry) portal, alongside the required re-filing of CBP Form 7501 entries.

This marks the official start of the tariff refund process.

What We’re Doing

We moved quickly.

Our team has already identified all affected 2025 shipments and has begun submitting claims through the CAPE portal. This is a detailed process, but it is actively underway and being handled with urgency and precision.

Tariff Refund Timeline Expectations

As of April 20th, CBP has advised a 60- to 90-day processing window. However, the reality is that refunds will be issued on a rolling basis tied to liquidation timelines.

Based on current guidance, we expect funds to arrive in June or July, though timeline shifts would not be uncharacteristic of this administration, so we appreciate your patience as this process unfolds.

How Refunds Will Be Returned

When refunds are received, we will promptly and fully pass those funds back to you.

At this time, we cannot yet state exactly how or when tariff refund money will be returned, as there is no formal guidance from the government. Rest assured, however, that we will return these funds as soon as they are received.

Do You Need to Take Action?

No action is currently required on your end.

Royal New York paid the tariffs to the government, so we are the party responsible for filing the refund claims on your behalf. We are managing the entire tariff refund process and will communicate directly when refunds are received.

What’s Next?

We will continue to stay closely engaged with CBP and push this process forward wherever possible. As always, if you have questions, your RNY representative is available to discuss, though this reflects all information currently available.

Thank you for your continued support, and stay tuned for more updates.
