Super Herbs & Spices: What is ginger good for?

Have you found yourself wondering, what is ginger good for? Well you’re in luck our Super Herbs & Spices series is back, featuring ginger! If you missed the first post, check out our feature on turmeric here.

In 2022 and beyond, functional ingredients will continue to be in high demand as people seek food and drinks that promote wellness from within.  Consumers look to their diet to support immunity, energy, focus, relaxation, and digestion.  Digestion and gut health are linked to many other strands of health, so many seek ingredients that aid in maintaining a healthy stomach.

Closely related to turmeric and cardamom, ginger is a flowering plant first domesticated over 5,000 years ago in Southeast Asia.  It was one of the first spices to be exported from Asia, and today India leads the world’s production while China leads in exports.  Ginger’s spicy and pungent character makes it a key ingredient for many cuisines.  Both sweet and warming, the flavor is suited to both savory and sweet dishes and drinks.

So, what is ginger good for?

Like turmeric, ginger has anti-inflammatory properties, and is helpful in aiding digestion and easing nausea.  The active compound of fresh ginger is called gingerol, which is converted to shogaol when dried.  Gingerol and shogaol are responsible for the powerful scent and flavor.  Shogaol research has shown promise for several potential wellness benefits, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective.

How to use ginger

People around the world enjoy ginger as a tisane.  Steep 2-3 grams in 12oz of hot water for 5-10 minutes, and enjoy the zesty infusion at any time of day by itself or with lemon and honey.  It is one of the major components of a delicious chai blend, and pairs just as well with chocolate and fruity flavors.  Ginger simple syrup is a versatile staple for cafés and bars alike.  Our Ginger Peach is a year round favorite black tea blend that is super refreshing on a hot summer day.  Cold brew up a big batch for friends and family by steeping 3oz of tea in 1 gallon of cold water for 6 – 8 hours.  Store refrigerated for up to two days, or keg for nitro and enjoy for up to two weeks!

Ginger is also a perfect ingredient to add to smoothies for extra flavor & benefits. Try out our spicy summer smoothie, recipe below!
