Coffee from Indonesia & Oceania

text over a photo of coffee from bali indonesia

This offering comes from the island of Bali in Indonesia. In the 1970s and 1980s, the government enacted programs to rejuvenate coffee production. With the distribution of coffee seedlings to local farmers, an island-wide coffee growing campaign began. In Bali, coffee tree varieties include a high percentage of Bourbon and Typica grown with shade trees such as Erythrina, Albizia, tangerine, and orange.

The coffee is rich and sweet with warming spice notes that pair with a vanilla-like finish. I have been making pour overs of a light roast here and there since the pre-ship samples started to arrive and have continued to enjoy them through the first arrivals as well! Additionally, a great bonus to this offering is how well it blends with higher-graded Ethiopian naturals. I’ve been experimenting with a 75% Bali, 25% Ethiopian natural blend, and it has been turning out amazingly.

Kayumas Estate, translating to “Golden Wood,” is located on the island of Java in Indonesia. The estate can be found in northeast Bondowoso, a regency of Java in the highland plateaus. With high altitude and volcanic soil, Bondowoso provides perfect coffee-growing conditions.

The Kayumas coffee is grown on a government-run estate where it is handpicked and then processed with the fully washed method. This gives the coffee a cleaner and more acidic profile than you might find with other coffee from Indonesia. Java Kayumas is perfect as a single origin offering with its black cherry, caramel, and vanilla notes—it will not disappoint your “Mocha Java” lovers. Enjoy!

This Oceanic offering comes from the Timuza coffee cooperative, which represents over 200 smallholder farmers. Unlike other coffee from the Indonesia/Oceania region, this one is processed using the washed method instead of being wet-hulled. In doing so, this creates a full-bodied, sweet cup of coffee.

I think the most unique part of this offering is how much body it holds without having that earthy tone commonly portrayed in many other Indonesian/Oceanic coffees due to their processing method. Plus, this particular coffee has a nutmeg note that will make it a great addition to any holiday blend!

This coffee comes from an indigenous reserve in Nariño, Colombia, called Aponte. Nariño is one of my favorite growing regions in Colombia because producers in this region aren’t afraid to experiment with their coffee processing! That’s how we end up with something as unique as this lot.

Now, this coffee definitely leans toward the more fermented side of honey processing. In fact, it almost resembles a natural offering as it has a ton of bright berry notes. What makes it stand out to me, however, is that it finishes with a sweet vanilla note that really ties the whole cup together in an unusual & exciting way.

This coffee comes to us from producer Hailu Abebe and is sourced from the Chelchele washing station in the famed Yirgacheffe region of Ethiopia. In the cup, I found this washed offering to be crisp and clean. I was impressed by the integration of raspberry and peach notes with a sweet floral finish. Like many of our other uniquely-processed micro lots, this offering is available exclusively as a 22lb. box on our Royal NY Line Up!

Finca Nuevo Mexico is a family-owned and operated farm situated at 1300masl in La Concordia, Mexico. This multi-generational family farm has been operational since 1978 but is only in its first generation of coffee production. The current owner, Ricardo Ibarra Baumann, inherited the farm from his mother. Spanning 75 hectares with an additional 320 hectares dedicated to natural reserves, Finca Nuevo Mexico practices a three-stage picking process to select only the ripest cherries.

While coffees from Mexico are popular for their clean and classic, washed mild profiles, they don’t often have attributes that make them stand out. However, this single varietal Sarchimor offering from our friends at Finca Nuevo Mexico stood out. This coffee has a more dynamic sweetness and depth of flavor compared to typical offerings from Mexico. Notes of caramel apple, ripe plum, and sweet citrus distinguish this Mexican coffee from the rest.

Green Teas

Hojicha is a roasted green tea that comes from Japan and typically has an earthy and tobacco-like profile. In this blend, it’s mixed with green rooibos, ashwagandha, and cacao nibs to create a sweeter profile.

This blend has a great holiday season vibe with its rich notes of caramel and toffee. I prefer it brewed hot to enjoy the full aroma on a wintery afternoon. The low caffeine content also makes it a great choice for that late afternoon pick-me-up.

This Organic Sencha is grown in Kagoshima, located in the southern region of Japan. It is produced during the first harvest, or “shincha,” which takes place in early spring.

I have always been a fan of green teas that showcase a sweet, vegetal tone. This sencha is clean and sugary with a nice snap pea quality to it that I’ve been liking a lot lately.

This tea powder is just fine-ground hojicha that makes a stellar latte. In fact, you prepare it the same way as you would matcha and pour your favorite kind of milk over it—or you can drink it alone!

I’ve been making it at home on the weekends because I love the richness of it and the roasty-toasty flavor. Organic Hojicha Powder pairs well with chocolate, caramel, or hazelnut syrups. Since it’s also low in caffeine, you can even make yourself a nice, evening latte!

This new holiday blend of tea and spices is meant to replicate the notes of your traditional eggnog, especially after you’ve added cream!

While our Holiday Eggnog was built around the addition of milk or a milk substitute, I’ve been drinking it without, and I think it’s excellent. The blend is warm, spicy, and has a smooth body that makes it an easy drinker.

text over loose peppermint white chocolate tea

This tea blend features a base of African rooibos and honeybush, enhanced by the addition of roasted cacao nibs and rich, white chocolate. A hint of peppermint essential oil provides a refreshing, cooling finish. I enjoy the fusion of chocolate, peppermint, and vanilla flavor notes complemented by a full body.
