About The Class

The Q Grader course is a six-day intensive and assesses a learner’s readiness to evaluate coffee in a professional setting. Rooted in the Coffee Value Assessment, the curriculum is designed to allow experienced coffee professionals to demonstrate their ability to evaluate coffee by its physical, descriptive, affective, and extrinsic attributes.

The course includes 9 comprehensive exams (8 practical evaluations and 1 written assessment). During the course, learners are allowed three attempts to pass each exam. All practical and written assessments must be passed to pass the course and subsequently earn the first three-year license. Every three years, Q Graders are eligible to renew their license but will not need to take the full six-day course again to do so.

The course includes various activities to train/calibrate and to test the cuppers’ skills in proper cupping sample preparation and evaluation practices, evaluating a coffee in a cupping format utilizing the SCA CVA Cupping forms, olfactory senses, green and roasted coffee grading, acid identification, basic cupping skills evaluations, triangulations, sensory skills tests, and roasted coffee tests.

If you are unable to attend this class after signing up, you will receive a full refund only if we are able to fill your spot. All purchased class credits will transfer to a future class at RNY. RNY reserves the right to cancel or reschedule classes, as necessary. If a class is cancelled or rescheduled RNY will refund cost of class only.
