Tea Blending 101

Tea blending is both a technical and creative process, often requiring multiple iterations before achieving the ideal cup. A successful blend needs balance, which begins with carefully considering your selection of ingredients. Here’s our how-to guide on tea blending so you can create the perfect offering for your menu.

5 steps of tea blending

Step 1: Choose Your Base

All tea blends start with a base. This base can consist of traditional tea varieties, such as black, green, oolong, white, or even Pu-erh tea. If you’re looking for a caffeine-free tea, or tisane, you can try a base like rooibos or honeybush.

The base you choose plays a key role in your blend’s character, impacting important characteristics like body, mouthfeel, and flavor.

Step 2: Build Complexity

Once you select your base, you need to incorporate other ingredients to build complexity. Spices can add warmth and depth, while botanicals can add an enticing aroma to your blend as well as visual appeal. Herbs can add freshness, and dried fruit pieces can contribute a very mellow sweetness.

Step 3: Balance Your Tea Blend

Balance is critical when it comes to tea blending. No ingredient should overwhelm or drown out another, and you should pair ingredients that make sense. Bright, citrusy profiles often pair well with florals or herbs, while spices tend to complement a stronger or earthier tea base.

Step 4: Make Necessary Adjustments

Adjust as you go, and make tweaks as needed. No one gets it right on their first try. At Royal Tea New York, we sometimes go through four or five different versions of a blend before we’re satisfied with the final product.

Practice makes perfect, and you’ll eventually gain a better understanding of what works and what doesn’t.

Step 5: The Final Cup

Once you’ve finalized your tea blend, it’s time to consider how you’ll introduce your customers to your new offering. Will you serve it as a tea latte? Do you need to design new retail packaging to complement your blend? Should your blend’s name list the primary ingredients or be more creative? How will you describe the flavor profile to your customers? At the end of the day, your job is to sell the tea you just spent time and resources creating.
