The Matcha Shortage

If you need a refresher on what’s happening with matcha, here’s an excerpt from our July 2025 update:

Nowadays, matcha is not just an offering on a café menu. It’s quickly becoming a staple in functional beverages, skincare, supplements, and more. Global demand is outpacing the rate at which producers can mill their tencha (the raw material used for matcha). Stone-milled matcha can be produced at a rate of only 40g per hour…so, in other words, very slowly! While other methods, like bead milling, have a faster output, it’s still difficult for farmers to get ahead. This creates a bottleneck, often forcing producers to turn away new clients in order to prioritize long-standing partnerships.

Matcha Price Increases?

Yes, we are seeing significant price increases on matcha this year. Many of our producers have raised their costs (some by as much as 40%) due to high global demand and the strain on milling capacity. There is also the 15% reciprocal tariff on Japan imports to consider; on a premium tea like matcha, this adds a substantial impact.

While we do our best to keep our teas affordable, it is just as important that we appropriately compensate the farmers and producers who make these exceptional teas possible. We believe in paying a fair price to our partners in Japan, and we hope you will find it reflects in the quality you receive.
