Brazil Coffee Tariffs Survey

Evan Kluender
Trader, Purchase & Sales

Brazil coffee tariffs are a hot topic of conversation in the industry right now. With useful flavor profiles and an unparalleled ability to produce inexpensive coffee at a massive scale, Brazil has cemented themselves as the world’s largest coffee producer, responsible for growing about 40% of coffee consumed globally each year. However, on August 7th of this year, the Trump administration imposed a 50% tariff on all imports from Brazil. This significantly impacted costs and forced roasters to rethink their blends. We’d like to know how to help you work through these challenges and what solutions you’re hoping to see.

Changes to Brazil Coffee

As importers, it is paramount that we have a pulse on what our customers’ needs are. This is especially true in these (now all-too-common) “unprecedented times.” Our goal is to make sure we can continue to bring you a steady supply of specialty green coffee. We’ve already taken steps to try and get ahead of these new, high costs by sourcing large volumes of coffees to use in lieu of Brazil. That being said, we understand that our customers have built followings over the years based on the quality of those offerings, ones that frequently include the use of coffee from Brazil.

In years past, we’ve been able to rely on historical data to accurately project what we need to bring in. Recently, however, we’ve seen many of our customers pivoting to different coffees in order to adapt to this new environment. So, we’d like to take this opportunity to learn about what you, our customers, are doing to combat the high costs of Brazilian coffee. We created this brief survey to better understand your needs so we can consistently carry the coffees you need most.
