Now that fall is approaching, there’s no better time to perfect your chai game. A well-made chai latte is a great addition to any café offering. It’s full of aromatic spices, warmth, and the right amount of sweetness. Here’s how to make a chai latte and get it right every time.

How to Make a Chai Latte

1. Start with Quality Chai Loose Leaf

The foundation of a great chai latte is the tea itself. Using a high-quality chai blend for your concentrate will ensure a strong and delicious beverage. Look for blends that use robust Assam tea and real spices like cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger, star anise, or pepper. While there’s no “rule” for what spices to use, a good chai should be spicy and a little sweet. We offer a premade chai loose leaf blend, or you can try our tea and spices “a la carte” to craft your own!

2. Proper Brewing

How you steep your loose leaf is equally as important. Gently simmer in water for approximately 5 minutes to extract the full flavor from the tea and spices. You can also simmer in milk, but keep in mind that this limits your options when it comes to customers with any lactose sensitivities.

3. Perfecting the Recipe

We generally recommend a 1:1 ratio of milk to chai concentrate, but you should play around with it and see what works best for you! Chai pairs well with all kinds of milk, from dairy to oat to almond.

4. Sweetening the Cup

You can pre-sweeten the concentrate itself, or you can sweeten it after brewing to allow for more customization. Sugar, honey, maple syrup, and agave are all great options to cater to various preferences.

5. Flavoring Your Chai

There are all kinds of fun twists you can experiment with to make your chai latte align with seasonal flavors. Pumpkin spice, vanilla, and chocolate work well in the cooler weather. In the warmer months, you can try incorporating flavors like citrus, mint, or coconut. Have fun with it!

Making a good chai latte is all about balance. By sourcing high-quality ingredients and offering easy customizations, you can craft a stellar chai latte every time.
